You would do well to exercise a little common sense before your journey and plan ahead, this is one of the main points of boating safety. However, many boaters are more taken up with how much fun they can have on the water that they may forget about boating safety. Understandably the main objective whilst out boating is to have a good time however this should not be to the detriment of your health.

    Plan The Voyage.

One of the simplest boating safety tips you will be told about is to plan your voyage well before leaving your home and know about your destination, the people that are going with you and also when you expect to return. An additional important safety measure is to ensure that your craft is seaworthy especially of you are only intending to go for a short voyage or you have any small nagging doubts. The engine should be reliable and there should also is proper safety equipment on board, and you should absolutely never overload your boat. It goes without saying that you should also have spare fuel in case you run out of loaded fuel and a basic tool kit should the engine start to deteriorate in some way. Some other essentials are a PDF (Personal Floatation Device) and make sure that there are enough to go around! You will also require a fire extinguisher (for obvious reasons) and  bilge pump.

The Ugly Head Of Bad Weather.

Some things we are in control of and somethings we are not and with boating related activities the weather is one of the things that we are most definately not in control of. Therefore if a thunderhead rises up you must be aware of how to deal with it such as not trying to outrun it but to turn to a 90 degree angle from the direction it approaches in. When the storm now hits you you should then stowe away all your loose equipment and point the bow at the storm and power up the motorized engine sufficiently enough to ride the higher waves. These tips are basic and of sound and simple advice and by following them you can avert any potential disasters and continue to experience all the joys that boating has to bring you.

Please note that the tips above are of a basic nature only, you will need to consider that sailing in more dangerous weather and ocean systems will require more knowledge and experience in the area of ocean safety.
