Monday, May 26th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedBoating safety commences with showing a little common sense and planning your journey well ahead of time. The reality is that, generally speaking, most folk that are preparing for a day out on the water forget this and do not tend to focus on the safty issues at all. No doubt, boating is about having a lot of pleasure on the water, but it is no reason to let your guard down and put yourself and others at risk.
Voyage Planning.
One of the simplest boating safety tips you will be told about is to plan your voyage well before leaving your home and know about your destination, the people that are going with you and also when you expect to return. Additionally you should apply common sense and make sure that your boat is seaworthy even if you are only going on a short voyage. Never overload your boat and make sure the engine is checked and that you have the neccessary safety equipment onboard. In addition to these checks you should also store some extra fuel in case of leakages in the fuel line or you run out unintentionally and you should also load a basic tool kit. Another boating safety tip is to always have a Person Floatation Device or PFD for everyone on board and having a floating cushion is also recommended. In addition, you need to have a proper fire extinguisher and makes sure that your battery is properly charged and the bilge pump works properly.
The Weather And It’s Threat.
Some things we are in control of and somethings we are not and with boating related activities the weather is one of the things that we are most definately not in control of. Therefore if a thunderhead rises up you must be aware of how to deal with it such as not trying to outrun it but to turn to a 90 degree angle from the direction it approaches in. When the storm now hits you you should then stowe away all your loose equipment and point the bow at the storm and power up the motorized engine sufficiently enough to ride the higher waves. By following these very simple tips and procedures there is no reason why you can’t stay safe during your boating experiences and enjoy them as well.
The above safety measures are basic and can help prevent any disaster however you will require more complex measures when dealing with different oceans and weather systems as well as varying boat sizes, power and speed.
